In April this year Torbay was announced as one of three successful local authorities set to benefit from up to £4million each as part of a new Government funding programme called Sea Change.
The funding programme aims to kick start wider economic regeneration in coastal areas through specific investment in culture and heritage.
In order to maximise the funding available Torbay is required to submit proposals on how the money could be spent by Monday 2 June. As a result the following plans have been drawn up for Brixham’s Strand and Quay inner harbour area.
The proposals focus on improving the 'public realm' - or the look and ambience of the area. They range from simple improvements including natural stone paving, new balustrades, feature lighting, new seating, litter bins and signage to larger scale plans including a new pedestrian bridge between King’s Quay and East Quay and a new town square or meeting area built within the harbour next to the old fish market.
At this stage that the proposals put forward for Brixham's Strand and The Quay are ideas and are not set in stone. However, we must put forward concepts in order to qualify for any funding - it is a case of no ideas, no chance of funding.
I am aware that some of the ideas put forward for Brixham may not come to fruition or when we start to look at things in more detail may not be possible, such as the inner harbour passenger bridge, but I am keen to hear people's views on the initial proposals before they go forward for consideration.
If you wish to have your say on the proposals please use the comment sheet below and return it to either Brixham Town Council, Town Hall, New Road, Brixham, TQ5 8TA or Brixham 21, Office 14, New Fish Quay, Brixham, TQ5 8AW.
The deadline for comments is Friday 9 May.
Cllr Derek Mills
Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Tourism
