With Phase 1 of Torre Abbey's multi-million pound makeover complete, the Abbey’s project team is now focusing its efforts on funding for Phase 2 of the project. In 2004 the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded a substantial £4.9million towards the first phase of works which has seen the oldest parts of the Abbey totally transformed and the addition of much improved visitor access.

Torbay Council Cabinet Member and member of the project steering group, Councillor Jeanette Richards said: "Restoration of the south range is on the priority list as this part of the Abbey, particularly the lintols over the windows and the roof, have deteriorated considerably over the years. In order to fulfil our educational requirements for the funding we will also be looking to refit the main south range galleries; including new interpretation panels; guides in various formats; including audio; more activities for children and special provision for people disabilities, including those with impaired hearing and vision."

More than just a museum, Torre Abbey has been home to the town’s extensive art collection since the 1930s and the Phase 2 project will help to ensure that these fine galleries can continue to attract top exhibitions and arts events.
