The attractions around Torre Abbey Meadows are expecting to welcome an additional 30,000 visitors this year and they are working together to make the most of the influx.  At the heart of this new promotional drive is Antony Gormley's Field for the British Isles, a free exhibition in the Spanish Barn.

Perhaps most famous for his giant sculpture Angel of the North, Gormley's Turner-prize-winning Field series is a startling and arresting sight; thousands of unglazed, fired, small clay figures, standing closely together, all staring towards the viewer.  The Field for the British Isles, comprising 40,000 clay figures will fill much of the Abbey's huge Spanish Barn and will be open to the public free of charge from 27th June to 23rd August 2009.

Anna Whitehead, Torbay's Arts Development Officer explains, "The pulling power of this major exhibition will be immense and we don't want these 30,000 visitors to see the exhibition and then leave - we want them to spend the day at Torre Abbey Meadows.  The Meadows have always been a popular gathering place and a favourite spot for holidaymakers.  The choice of attractions in the area is great: the Hi Flyer balloon, Pitch and Putt, Crazy Golf and Torre Abbey itself.  All have agreed to offer generous discounts to visitors to the exhibition to encourage them to stay around.  These offers will be them a real reason to stay for the day."

The Spanish Barn is a medieval tithe barn built by the Canons of the Abbey to store grain, a farm of taxes for the tenants of the Abbey's vast tracts of land.  Its name dates from its role as a prison for 397 sailors captured by Sir Francis Drake from the Spanish Armada.

Visitors to the Gormley exhibition will receive their vouchers on entering the exhibition.  The offers include generous discounts, deals on family tickers and two for one offers.
