  • TACO 3D Exhibition Wins Awards...
    10/09/2010

This years TACO 3D exhibition which showcases some of the best contemporary art in the South West, finished on 30th August

Volkhardt Muller won the Artist of the Year Award with his piece Cell. Cell formed the centre – piece of this year’s exhibition.

For Amelia Marriette, the curator of TACO 3D, Muller’s piece is “of Turner Prize winning quality. It is an exceptionally thoughtful piece, the art work was ‘made’ by the prisoners who were held in the holding cell awaiting trial. It is their graffiti or scratchings that make the art. The fact that the cell cannot be entered inverts the whole idea of incarceration and comments both on society at large and more specifically relates directly to Hirst’s piece Mother and Child, Divided – a cow trapped in formaldehyde which was on show as part of the blockbuster Art on the English Riviera exhibition Tamed in the Spanish Barn this year.”

Torre Abbey not only gave an award to the TACO artist of the year, which was chosen by Amelia Marriette, Peter Randall Page and Claire Donovan, but also the TACO 3D People’s Choice Award. This was chosen by visitors who wrote on the comment board at the Abbey. JamesLake’s cardboard piece Sitting Without Purpose was the outright winner.

James’ piece was so admired that the artist Heather Jansch, who also exhibited three of her wonderful driftwood horses in Tamed and TACO 3D this year, has taken the piece and will be showing it as part of her Devon Artists Studio offering until 19th September.

Three other artists, Beth Jenkins, Steve Baddeley and Ben Yates also received a judge’s commendation award. Claire Donovan stated on the day of the judging that “TACO 3D is a fantastic show engaging the brain and engaging all senses”. “Amusing, charming, provocative, beautiful, lyrical, intriguing, poignant; ironic; tactile, impressive”. Well done Torquay!

Peter Randall Page feels that "the standard of work in the show was outstanding. Having made our selection from photographs I was particularly gratified that every piece we chose was more impressive 'in the flesh' than in the images we initially saw. Choosing a winner was painfully difficult and for me there were a handful of works which could have justified first prize. “Müller’s Cell is, however, an exceptional piece both in concept and execution. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience."
