Weddings
Due to our successful lottery funding application, we will be closed for Phase 2 restoration of the Abbey and are unable to accommodate weddings during 2012.
The grandeur and romance of this historic building can form a perfect backdrop for weddings, anniversaries and other private celebrations. The Abbey has a number of beautiful rooms and halls available for weddings and stunning backdrops for photographs. The Abbey is licensed for formal marriage ceremonies and blessings can be held in the Cary family chapel.
The Spanish Barn is a stunning and atmospheric venue for larger weddings and can be dressed and prepared for both the ceremony and for the wedding breakfast. It is also often used for informal celebrations and lends itself to stylish period themes.
The Cary family ballroom is the next largest room available for weddings and functions. A fine Georgian room overlooking Torre Abbey Meadows and the sea beyond it is ideal for smaller weddings and family celebrations. It served as the Mayor's Parlour for many years during which time it was the venue for civic receptions, hosting VIPs from around the world.
For a medieval atmosphere guests can use the ancient undercrofts. This is the earliest part of the Abbey and was once the lay brothers refectory. There are two undercroft areas available for weddings and functions and both lead nicely into the cloister gardens where guests can enjoy the Riviera's balmy days and evenings.
Other areas of the Abbey licenced for weddings are the Dining Room, the Gatehouse and, for something really unusual, the tropical palm house. The Abbey and grounds offer many fine vistas and quiet spots ideal for wedding photographs. Although the Chapel is not available for ceremonies it can be used for blessings. Its imposing atmosphere adds a flavour of the spiritual and historic heritage of the Abbey and its role at the heart of Torquay for over eight centuries.
