We currently have the following vacancies at Torre Abbey Museum.

Museum Manager 

We are looking to recruit a Museum Manager for Torre Abbey (on the South Devon Coast) one of the region’s key cultural assets with a unique collection and a growing reputation for innovative exhibitions and programmes.

The successful manager will lead the team at Torre Abbey through the next phase of our National Lottery Heritage Fund bid, successfully contributing towards a project that will improve the structural integrity of the building, increase the site’s commercial viability and enhance the award winning creative learning and exhibitions programme.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate successful delivery of all elements of museum operations including strategic planning, commercial viability, retail, community engagement, programming, strong curation and collections development, and innovation in audience development and marketing.

Applicants should also hold an Associateship of the Museums Association (AMA).

Interviews are provisionally scheduled to take place during the week of 25 April 2019.

Custodian

Torre Abbey is one of the region’s key cultural assets with a unique collection and a growing reputation for innovative exhibitions and community engagement. Soon to be engaging in an application for a third major restoration project, to increase the structural integrity of the site and further develop commercial stability.

Listed as a scheduled ancient monument the site includes two grade 1 listed buildings and five grade 2 listed buildings, extensively redeveloped during 2 previous restoration phases. Torre Abbey is a truly unique place to work.

This vital role in the operation of Torre Abbey is varied and interesting. It would be suited to an adaptable problem solver, keen to turn their hands to a variety of tasks and activities.

The successful applicant will support with day-to-day operations, with particular relevance to security, visitor services and health and safety. The job is predominantly a hands-on role, promoting a safe and well-kept environment through janitorial and reactive maintenance. However, the successful applicant will also be immersed in museum collections care, exhibition development and display, event planning and supervision, as well as customer and volunteer interaction.

As a key member of the team at this visitor attraction, regular weekend and evening working is required.

Business & Collections Support Officer

Torre Abbey is one of the region's key cultural assets with a unique collection and a growing reputation for innovative exhibitions and community engagement. The business will soon be engaging in an application for a third major restoration project, to increase the structural integrity of the site and further develop commercial stability. 

Listed a scheduled ancient monument, the site includes two Grade 1 listed buildings and five Grade 2 listed buildings, extensively redeveloped during two previous restoration phases. Torre Abbey is a truly unique place to work. 

This role is similar to that of a traditional collections registrar, but with elements of business administration. Work will involve delivering Torre Abbey’s Collections Documentation Plan and overseeing the work of the team of collections documentation volunteers. The role will also include the ongoing digitalisation of the collection onto our Collections Management System.

The post will be closely involved with the work of the programming team and particularly relevant to incoming exhibitions and the associated loan agreements. Other work stands will be varied. For example, developing a ‘handling collection’ in collaboration with Torre Abbey’s Education Officer or engaging in sourcing works from the collection for rotation of permanent displays.

The administration element of the role will focus on bookings, generating purchase orders and income banking.

Applicants should be able to evidence experience of collection care, documentation, interpretation and research. Advanced organisational skills and an attention to detail are priorities.

Working days are negotiable and are predominantly weekdays. However, sometimes evening and weekend working may be required to support Torre Abbey’s activities.
