Volunteer

Volunteer at Torre Abbey

We welcome volunteers at Torre Abbey to help support our staff and customers and to be ambassadors for the attraction itself. So if you like history, culture, the arts and people, please do consider getting in touch.

Do you have time and skills to spare?

We are looking for volunteers to help us support Torbay’s most iconic ancient building. History, culture, arts, people, gardening – whatever your passion is we have a role for you so please do get in touch if you want to be part of our award-winning team.

How you can help?

You can help us as much or as little as you are comfortable with, and we have opportunities in all shapes and sizes. For some people helping at events, whether that be open air theatre or one of our fairs might be a suitable option, whilst others choose to commit on a regular basis, supporting staff at the Abbey to achieve remarkable things.

In return for helping us for a minimum of 25+ hours annually you will be rewarded with

  • Our 1196 Annual membership, giving you free access to Torre Abbey.
  • 10% off in our shop and café.
  • Free parking in our car park whilst you are volunteering.
  • The chance to be part of a team, make new friends and help to ensure Torre Abbey and its gardens is a wonderful place to visit.

FAQs

How long do I need to commit for?

This can vary. Placements are fixed term, events can be one-off, operational roles such as reception, gift shop and gardening can be ongoing and flexible.  We consider each individual case by case with the emphasis on what you achieve while you are volunteering.

What might the role involve?

We use volunteers in a variety of ways, from welcome hosts, research projects, to people stewarding at individual events like our Open Air Cinema festival and our Winter Fest. General volunteers who may want to join us for regular days may get to do everything from room stewarding and guided tours to helping out on our main reception and in the gift shop. Our education and learning officers are often looking for additional help, while we also have a large team of volunteers helping out in the gardens for those with green fingers.

What you can expect as a volunteer?

  • Interesting work in a fascinating historic building
  • Opportunity to make new friends
  • Enjoy team social and recognition events
  • Join social events from our programme as an events steward
  • Learn new skills
  • Knowledge that you are supporting a worthwhile local organisation

For certain roles around education and organised children’s activities, we may require you to complete a Disclosure and Barring Screening along with reading Torbay Council’s 'Safeguarding Policy and Guidelines'.
