Torre Abbey is delighted to announce that the Cary family has officially gifted its historic collection to the Abbey, marking a significant moment in the site's heritage story.

The Cary family, whose legacy is deeply intertwined with both Torquay and Torre Abbey’s history, has generously given a remarkable collection of artefacts that were once part of the Abbey’s early 20th-century holdings. These pieces, previously on loan or held in private ownership, now permanently return to their original home.

The Cary collection includes a range of historically significant items including an entire dinner service, showcasing the Cary Coat of Arms, large and small family portraits, along with numerous prints and militaria already on display, that reflect the family’s long-standing connection to the Abbey and the region. This donation not only enriches Torre Abbey’s permanent collection but also enhances its ability to share local heritage with the public.

Councillor Jacqueline Thomas, Cabinet Member for Events, Tourism, Culture and Corporate Services commented: “We are incredibly grateful to the Cary family for their generosity and trust. This donation strengthens our commitment to preserving and celebrating Torbay’s rich cultural history.”

Lucinda Heron, Torre Abbey Manager mentioned that “many of the acquired artefacts are already on show in our 800 year exhibition, however securing vital ownership of these significant pieces of our local history ensures they remain accessible to the community and visitors alike”.
