We live in a busy world, with noise and distractions at every turn, but occasionally, we need to take time to stop, reflect, rebalance, taking a moment to find calm.
JPR Stitch (aka. Dr Jack Roberts) is an artist known for his unique approach to stitching and embroidery where he creates bright, colourful and abstract artworks. He uses freehand machine embroidery as a tool for conveying emotion and a sense of calmness and balance.
'When I create, I sink into calmness and the inner tranquillity that guides my art. When I sit at my sewing machine to stitch, I am free, free from distraction and worry, I am quiet, still and calm. I drift into emptiness, almost like entering the eye of a storm - in that moment all is still, calm, tranquil.’
The exhibition will bring together two bodies of work, his quick and loose ‘daily stitching's’ one of which is created each and every day, and his bold, bright and heavily embroidered pieces, which are the antithesis of his daily practice, where one piece can take 3-4 months to create.
Torre Abbey provides the perfect backdrop for this exhibition - Torre Abbey is a haven away from the busy town that surrounds it, the gardens, buildings and monastic ruins evoke a sense of peace and calm, giving space for sanctuary and contemplation for those who seek it. Bringing this exhibition of JPR Stitch’s work to Torre Abbey provides a lens to explore how different people find calmness and balance within their lives - through place, art, or by other means.
It is hoped that the exhibition encourages viewers to slow down, observe the threads and reflect.
